Diamonds can be set in platinum, which is the priciest and most durable precious metal, or in yellow or white gold. The shape of the stone can impact the setting, but more than anything else, it’s a matter of personal taste.
Most of the setting styles fall into one of three categories.
CLASSIC SETTINGS
Often referred to as the Tiffany setting, this is the most popular style for diamond solitaires. The stone is set with prongs and mounted on a smooth band. It can be enhanced with tapered baguettes or other side stones. The solitaire is the most classic and traditional engagement ring style. The name solitaire derives from its singular stone status in design.
MODERN SETTING
There are many contemporary designs that feature stones set in metal. One such modern design is the pavé – embedding tiny diamonds into the band of the ring – or halo. One of the most secure ring settings, bezels have become particularly popular with wearers who are outdoorsy. On the other end of the spectrum are tension set rings that use pressure to hold the ring in a manner that makes the diamond appear suspended.
ANTIQUE SETTINGS
These rings are more ornate, and often feature etching or smaller stones set into the band and/or around the centre stone. Setting many small stones around one diamond, or choosing a pave mounting can also make your ring look larger, especially from a distance.
